Littleton is located in Grafton County in northern New Hampshire, near the western edge of the White Mountains. Main Street carries U.S. Route 302 through the center of town, and the Ammonoosuc River runs directly through the downtown area.

Business & Downtown

Littleton's downtown continues to serve as a shopping and service center for the surrounding region. In 2003, Littleton received a Great American Main Street Award recognizing the community's downtown revitalization work.

Littleton History

Main Street, about 1872

The area that became Littleton was first chartered under the name Chiswick in 1764 and later regranted as Apthorp in 1770. The first town meeting was held in 1787. Mills at the Ammonoosuc Falls helped establish the village center, and the arrival of the railroad in 1853 encouraged further growth.
